Are you shopping on Black Friday?

The grocery stores are packed, the ovens are on, the turkeys are bought and Thanksgiving approaches. Soon after the day of thanks and hours of eating, the Thanksgiving festivities end and people may begin to head out to the malls  to ring in Black Friday. If you can get yourself up, on the road and find a parking spot, congratulations you made it that far. Most importantly, on this day, be awake, be sure your thinking is quick and your movements are at top speed to grab that last toy on the shelf.

Be careful and don’t get trampled. Seriously. In 2008, during the Black Friday frenzy, a worker at Walmart in New York got trampled to death. Also in 2008, two shoppers were shot in a dispute in California, all according to an article posted by TIME magazine.

A short history on Black Friday

According to an article on BlackFriday.com, the term “Black Friday” was coined in the 1960s when the retail stores would go from “red” to “black” in their accounting records. Red represented losses and black showed profits. However, this major annual shopping day represents the stock market plunging, which was set off by gold spectators and the stock market crashing.

Looking up

Even though this year’s expected shoppers are about 7 million less than last year, the projected amount of sales this year are at $602.1 billion, a number sent out by The National Retail Foundation, reported on Syracuse.com.
