Art from the heart

Darek Gogol is a concept designer in every sense of the word, crafting and conceptualizing intricate, fantastical creations that have awed audiences in more 30 films.Today he will be speaking at Kapiʻolani Community College as part of the New Arts Lecture Series, presented by the New Media Arts program.

His presentation entitled, “Before the Green Light,” will shed light on the triumphs and obstacles he faces with every project, bringing with him boards of original artwork. During his discourse, he will examine the current culture of animation, and discuss the viability of a career in animation.

Originally from Poland, he moved to England in the 1980’s where he began working as an illustrator in animation and commercial advertising. He eventually wound up in Steven Spielbergʻs animation company Ambimation, and travelled across the pond permanently to work with Disney Studios in the United States.

Since his illustrious career began, he has worked on films including the “Matrix,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Minority Report,” and Disney classics such as “The Lion King” and Beauty and the Beast.”

Animation is an often overlooked, yet a deeply sophisticated art form that offers more than the ostensible work put in to it. Any insight into it’s magical process is surely time spent well, especially for aspiring animators.

The lecture begins promptly at 7 p.m in Kopiko 202, and is free and open to the public. Special support for the series is provided by the Wallis Foundation. For more information, please contact Sharon Sussman at 734 – 9382.
