Date rape drug incident at UH prompts warnings to students

A University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa student reported to campus security yesterday that she may have been given a drink containing a date rape drug.

According to an email sent by campus security yesterday, the student told security officials that she was approached at Mānoa Gardens and Ba-Le by two males she did not know on Friday, Feb. 24. They offered her a drink and after consuming it, the student said she had no recollection of the rest of the night. Campus security said in the email that she woke up in an apartment off-campus with someone she didn’t know.

In the email, the student reported that she had symptoms similar to those of a date-rape drug, such as a feeling of intoxication and memory loss.

The UH campus security is still investigating the incident. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact UH Manoa’s campus security at 956-6911, Honolulu Police Department at 911 and the UH Manoa Women’s Center at 956-8059.

Campus security warned students in its email sent yesterday to not leave drinks unattended and to resist accepting drinks from people they don’t know. Campus security at Kapi‘olani Community College can be reached at 734-9900.
