International Games Week is less than a month away. Starting on Feb. 10 at the Lama Library, students will be able to experience food, drinks, and board games from different cultures. Kapi‘o has already covered some of the details and origins of the event here.
Each day of the week will focus on a different region. Oceania will open the week on Monday, followed by America on Tuesday, Asia on Wednesday, Europe on Thursday, and Africa and the Middle East on Friday. When a student participates in a game, he or she gets a ticket for the daily lottery.
According to librarian Joy Oehlers, prizes will include tickets to, “international and art house movies, jazz concerts, Hawaiian music (John Cruz and Dayna Kurtz), plays, and many more cultural happenings,” as well as tickets to ‘The Lion King’, UH basketball events, two $20 gift cards for Tiki’s Grill & Bar, two tickets to any one hour Kualoa Experience (value of $112), and an origami flower made of money ($15 total). Sponsors and donors of prizes include:
- The Polynesian Cultural Center
- Kumu Kahua Theater
- The Manoa Heritage Center
- Open Space Yoga
- Living Art Marine Center
- Iolani Palace
- Queen Emma Summer Palace
- Bishop Museum
- the Honolulu Museum of Art
- Doris Duke’s Shangri-la: Center for Islamic Arts and Culture
- The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii
- Kualoa Ranch
If your extracurricular persuasions lean more towards the outdoors, there are also surfing, stand-up paddling, kayaking, and hiking activities from Student Recreation Services at UH Manoa. Transportation and equipment is provided for these activities. All in all, ‘International Games Week’ participants stand to win over 45 prizes.
In an email to Kapi‘o, Oehlers also added:
“The aim of the International Games Week is to encourage students to experience different cultures through games and food samples. Have you ever tried Marmite on toast soldiers, cool cucumber sandwiches from an English High Tea, South African Honeybush tea, or Roasted Plantain Chips? Students will certainly enjoy the novel idea of making their own buttons using international symbols, cultural icons, and phrases in different languages. Want to learn how to say Hello in Vietnamese, Spanish or Korean? How do cats meow in different languages – chic French cats say miaou!”
People with curious or adventurous stomachs, people who like board games, and those who like food are encouraged to show up. International Games Week is primarily supported by the Honda International Opportunity Grant and co-sponsored by the Diversity and Equity Award from the Student Equity, Excellence, and Diversity Office.
