Internet addiction causes similar brain changes as drugs, alcohol

Internet is apart of daily life; it’s used in school, work and personal use. With the amount of social media Websites out there, Internet use has become an addiction.

An article posted by foxnews.com reported that Internet addiction causes brain changes similar to changes that are seen in those who are addicted to alcohol and drugs.

Brains of 17 young Internet users who are web addicts were scanned in China and were compared to 16 individuals who were not addicted.

Researchers found that changes in the brain were similar to alterations in the brain in people who are addicted to alcohol and cocaine.

Internet addiction disorder (IAD) has an effect in brain regions involving emotion generation and processing, decision-making, executive attention and cognitive control.

Up to ten percent are believed to be those who are games and play for hours without food, drink and neglect other parts of their lives, reported foxnews.com

With students in school spending majority of their time online, researching, mingling around on Facebook and Twitter, is IAD going to become more common?

The article also reported that those who game for hours disregard their real life obligations, which can affect marriages, attendance in school and emotional connection abilities with people.

Although later on the article explains that limitations of the study are not controlled and there may be other factors that can stimulate brain changes. IAD specifications are still questionable.
