KCCed Talks

Tuesday, April 24, Maiana Minahal’s English 100 class performed in the KCCed Talks which were modeled on the TED talks. The students that presented were the top three that were voted in her classes.

The first group of students presenting their inspiring talks were four of her students. The first speaker was, Sara Ray, 33 liberal arts major presented about Orthorexia, an eating disorder where people are concerned too much with eating healthy. She explained how not monitoring your healthy eating habits can take a turn and become dangerous. She also shared her experiences with the raw foods diet and how she came to learn about orthorexia.

The next speaker,  Dustin Thomas, 26 presented about Blissful Disambiguation. He explained that it’s important for us to know what’s going on in the world around us and to be aware. He shared a bit of information about how the Federal Reserve Bank is not a government run company, and how it controls money.

Seyna McArthur, 19, culinary major’s presentation was entitled, “Love life, love your health.” Based off health complications experienced in her family, she stressed the importance of being aware of what we eat on a daily basis, and how diabetes is a common disease. There are several different forms of diabetes and can be contracted in many different ways.

Last but not least, Sheen-Rae Lapitan, 18, liberal arts major spoke with the audience about “Television’s Ugly Truth.” Watching too much television can cause children to become violent, and obese. Parent’s also need to be aware that they can’t always shield their children from what they watch on TV. There are other health problems that can occur, like ADHD, cancer and autism, from watching television.

The students then took a 15 minute break between classes before the next round of speakers took the stage. The presentations were short and sweet, but packed with information that is great for any student, faculty and staff member, and worth it to take a minute to listen too.
