The 28th Annual Great Aloha Run Expo was held at the Neal Blaisdell Center on Saturday. At the expo, runners were able to pick up their reach packets containing information about the race and their race number which will serve as their ID on race day.
Students from 20 high schools also participated in the High School Challenge. In part one of a two part event, the students competed in relay races that consisted of events such as jump rope, push ups, sit ups and a three-legged race.
Part two of the High School Challenge will happen on race day and the winners will be determined then. That challenge consists of a school T-shirt count, a scream challenge and a final relay race.
The schools are competing for prize money that was generously donated by the Schnitzer Steel Corperation. The first, second and third place teams will receive $1,000, $750 and $500 respectively, and the seven runners-up will receive $200. Additionally, each school will receive $200 for participating in the High School Challenge thanks to HawaiiUSA FCU, according to greataloharun.com
The school with the lowest total score will be deemed the winner. So far Kapolei and Leilehua High Schools are tied for first place with 21 points. Campbell High School is in third with 23 points.
The 8.15 mile long race is set to start at 7 a.m. on Monday, President’s Day at Aloha Tower and finish at Aloha Stadium. Expect the roads surrounding Nimitz Highway to be closed from 4 a.m. to ensure the runners’ safety. The roads will reopen as the last racer passes through. Drivers should listen to KRATER 96 for traffic updates.
