The popular sport, referred to as football in america is loved by many across the nation. Varying levels of football are played and enjoyed by its fans: pop warner, high school, college, NFL. The sport in general is just fun to watch because anything can happen, the craziest plays can be made and the cheering of the crowd makes me want to scream at the top of my lungs. Living in Hawaiʻi is tough because you only have pop warner, high school, one college team (UH Warriors) and no NFL team. The substitute for no NFL team is University of Hawaiʻi Rainbow Warriors.
For the people of Hawaiʻi, we feel that the Warriors are like “the official” sport team. However, when it comes down to being an actual dedicated fan, Hawaiʻi has very few of them.
Hawaiʻi has what I’d like to call “fair weather fans.” To better explain the term, it basically means that the fans hear go to the games and cheer loud when Hawaiʻi is winning or doing good, but if they are doing bad, fans will turn on them and not come to the games, cheer, or even worse they leave the stadium early. How mortifying is that? To be one of the Warriors on the field and seeing your own fans walk out of the stadium thinking “all hope is lost.”
Well for those fans that went to this year’s game against Fresno State, you can easily say that this team doesn’t give up easily. At that very game at the half, the Warriors were already down 42-3. So many fans left the stadium in disappointment during half time and I should know because I was there. Sticking around for the whole game paid off as UH came back to only lose 42-37. I can easily say that was more than luck that contributed to that outstanding comeback effort.
In all fairness, I absolutely hate seeing people give up easily on this team. What really makes the team do good for the most part is the fans. We need more of them.
Sure there are people the people who would just not go to these games period, but I want to reach out to those of you who care and want to support the team. Do it. Nothing is stopping you, except for maybe buying the tickets. The tickets for these games aren’t expensive, but they aren’t cheap either.
What I propose is that all the UH system colleges have football tickets in one of their offices, ready to sell to those who want to buy, and maybe they could even get a small discount of 15-20 percent? It’s just a small way to entice the people of Hawaii to come to the Warrior games and cheer on the team.
They need the support and you, the people of Hawaiʻi, to bring in the noise and cheer for them, fill up the stadium so they know people care about the team and want them to win. The Warriors need you to be fans and supporters, so come on down to UH game to support our Warriors today!
