You’ve done the Great Aloha Run. Boring.

While it is exciting to see everyone in your family and neighborhood exercising, are you ready for something a little more fun and challenging?

Honolulu is rapidly becoming a destination for national race challenges. This year marked the second time for The Warrior Dash in February, the 12th annual Jamba Juice Banana Man Chase held on May 4, and the second year for Challenge Nation Saturday, June 1.

The Warrior Dash is a 5K (3 miles) obstacle course that includes jumping over a fire pit. The Banana Man Chase is a 5K around Magic Island where you chase runners dressed as bananas for a chance to win free Jamba Juice for a year. Challenge Nation is a timed scavenger hunt to find locations in downtown Honolulu, complete a task and take a picture for proof.

All of these races involve physical challenges and tests of will power, but yet they are very different in style.

That’s what it is all about: variety, having fun, getting outdoors and getting a little exercise along the way, right? Who doesn’t need a study break once in awhile?

If you missed these races but want to get a little exercise, get involved, and represent Hawai‘i and Kapi‘olani Community College in these national and local competitions, here’s a list of a few more coming to O‘ahu and one we wish would venture to the island.

Run or Dye

Run or Dye is currently open to pre-registration.  The 5K race will be held on Sept. 2 at Aloha Stadium.  In this race, you run along a designated path with color zones. Wearing white is encouraged, but not mandatory. There are four color zones: red, blue, orange, green.  Once in a color zone, you will be pelted with dye, so be ready. You can run or walk, and all ages are encouraged to attend. Don’t want to be a part of the race but still want to be involved?  There is a link on the website to sign up to be a volunteer: http://www.runordye.com/locations/Honolulu-2013

 Color Vibe

Color Vibe is very similar to Run or Dye, and it’s even at the same venue. Color Vibe will take place Nov. 11 at Aloha Stadium.  This race is the same style with a designated path and designated color zones.  You can run or walk and all ages and paces, fast or slow, are welcome.  You can register now or sign up to be a volunteer on the website. http://www.thecolorvibe.com/honolulu.php#

 Color Run

The Color Run is another race where you run through a course and get pelted with dye.  This one is a little different because it is mandatory to wear white and it takes place in Kapolei.  There is no date for the Color Run yet, but if you like their page on Facebook, they will send you updates as they come. http://thecolorrun.com/hawaii/#race_info

 Glow Run

Glow Run will be at Aloha Stadium on Aug. 23.  For this 5K, you are encouraged to wear white or your favorite neon color, put on glowing bracelets and other jewelry, like raver-style glow sticks, and run or walk.  This is a family-friendly event and afterwards there will be music, dancing and other performances under the black lights.  You can register to race or volunteer at the website. http://www.glowrunglow5k.com/#!glow-hawaii-glow/co67

 Honolulu Marathon

The Honolulu Marathon, for the real exercisers out there, will be on Dec. 8 this year.  A marathon is about 26 miles.  This year, it will start at Ala Moana Boulevard, go to Hawai‘i Kai and back to Waikīkī.  There is a separate start time for participants who want to walk it out. http://www.honolulumarathon.org/

 Run for Your Lives

Run for Your Lives has yet to come to Honolulu, but they are accepting emails regarding requested future locations.  Run for Your Lives is a zombie chase with designated zombies and runners.  You get to choose which side of the infection you want to be on. It is a 5K obstacle course, similar to The Warrior Dash, made more difficult by evading zombies who want your brains – I mean flags.  You are assigned a capture the flag style belt that represents your life.  Email them today to encourage them to come to Hawai‘i and for your chance to see how you would fare in a zombie apocalypse. http://www.runforyourlives.com/
