Top 10: The ones we love to hate

Thinking of the Top 10 Disney villains proved to be a difficult task.

The list of Disney villains kept growing, and not to mention it took me on a walk down memory lane. I’m about to dig up my old Disney movies and pop them in.

It was hard to decide who should take the top spot for worst villain, because each villain has their own trait of evil in them. But there are those few who have certain characteristics that set them apart. Check out the list and chime in your thoughts on who you think is the worst Disney villain.

Watching "Despicable Me" can actually be a delight. Gru is a comical character, the best worst villain.

10. Gru (“Despicable Me”)

The thing about this guy is his minions could almost make him likeable and comical. He does come up with some strange ideas of villain-like weapons and doesn’t have the best of intentions, but he has a saving grace when he takes in Margo, Agnes and Edith. Gru wants so bad to be bad, but he’s good.

He’s the best worst villain.

Sexist and old school, Gaston doesn't have any updated views on life. But, it's relevant for the time.

9. Gaston (“Beauty and the Beast”)

He gets on my nerves. Gaston treats women with disrespect and only likes Belle for her looks. He wants her to be his housewife. Gaston is someone who is clueless and vain. But Belle is actually an intelligent young woman and does not have an urge to marry Gaston and have his kids. She rejects him and  throws him on a murderous rage to kill beast.

So much dark magic in this movie. At least Snow White is a happy camper.

8. Queen Grimhilde (“Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”)

She wants Snow White’s heart. She’s intimidated because Snow White knocks the queen off the top spot for the “fairest” in all the lands.

The solution? Her heart in a box, of course. And she sends out her henchman to kill Snow White. The fact that Snow White is said to be more beautiful than the queen leads this evil lady to insanity.

Wanting to take someone’s heart? Wow. She’s officially known as the “The Evil Queen,” according to Disney Wikia.

Ursula is drawn with six tentacles, according to DisneyWikia.com.

7.  Ursula (“The Little Mermaid”)

After her eels are killed because of Ariel, she continues her deceit and manipulation among people living under King Triton by making people sign contracts to achieve her own personal goals, with no intent to fulfill her end of the bargain. King Triton signed his life away for Ariel’s safety. She also has powers known to absorb souls after transforming them into polyps if they don’t live up to their contract, according to DisneyWikia.com.

Another random fact? She calls her eels, “poopsies.”

Hades' flaming head and dark lips portray deceit.

6. Hades (“Hercules”)

We know that Hades is the Greek god of the underworld and Zeus’ brother. He wanted to take control of Mount Olympus and had people trade and sell their souls. And he doesn’t want his brothers son to succeed in life; he just tries to kill him off the whole movie. What’s happening? There are so many family members in these movies that are jealous of one another.

Trying to kill the son of Zeus? Such villainous behavior.

Throughout the movie he always appears to be so much bigger and taller than everyone else.

5. Jafar (“Aladdin”)

His voice. His voice, is so calm and and he seems so tall. When Jafar loses his temper, he becomes even more frightening. He’s always on some kind of higher ground then everyone when he talks to them. He’s looking down on people. He fits the part, and has a bird, in his case, Iago the parrot, talking in his ear the whole movie. Jafar has this goal to kill Aladdin and  rule the Kingdom.  He has different forms, a giant cobra and sorcerer. And wanting  to take Princess Jasmine as his wife is a bad idea. The weird thing though is that they’ve shared a kiss.

Her outbursts and overall goal lands her spot on my list.

4. Cruella De Ville (“101 Dalmatians”)

Who wants to kill puppies, let alone 101 of them?

I can’t even begin to imagine this as being a serious thought. Seeing animals being killed in a movie brings me to tears every single time even in an animated movie. Not to mention she looks the part of an evil villain. The fact that her hands are so bony, and she has long fingers with that cigarette she carries around, really adds more drama to her part. And — come on now, really? — she wants to get rid of puppies, sweet little ones — all for a fur coat.

The planning and deceit that goes on to kill Mufasa is unbelievable.

3. Scar (“The Lion King”)

Mufasa’s brother is power hungry. The act of betraying your own family and committing traumatizing acts in front of your brother’s son is not so noble and totally unforgivable. This qualifies Scar as being one of the worst villains. Scar not only takes over the Pridelands after killing Mufasa, but makes Simba think that he killed his own father.

Terrible.

Then those living at Priderock suffer through drought and lack of food.

And where did his scar come from?

 2. Maleficient (“Sleeping Beauty”) This villain is cruel and easily offended. Because she didn’t get invited to pay homage to the king and queen’s new child, Aurora, or Sleeping Beauty, Maleficient pretends to bestow blessings upon the child but instead curses her to her death.

Her laugh creeps me out, and she has the villain look, horns on her head, wears a black and purple cape and vanishes in green flames. As I was reading about Maleficient, I discovered that she is also a fairy, of course she has magical powers, but a fairy? This evil lady does not come to mind when I think about fairies.

1. Shan Yu (“Mulan”)

Shan Yu takes the worst villain prize in my book, but he’s in close running with Maleficient. Shan Yu is the leader of the Huns and inspired by Attila the Hun, according to DisneyWikia.com. He doesn’t have any super powers, but he’s just flat out frightening and beastly.

Let’s get serious here. He kills kids and can emerge unharmed from an massive avalanche caused by a hand-held mortar?

This guy was crazy and huge. He looks like a brick wall. I commend Mulan for defeating him.
